GOODWOOD REVIVAL 2024 | CELEBRATION LEGACY & NOSTALGIA

The 2024 edition of Goodwood Revival was another spectacular showcase of vintage motorsport, with a splash of rain to spice up the on-track action. The first weekend in September hosted the remarkable celebration of motorsport history, blending nostalgia with top-tier racing. Goodwood Revival fails to disappoint with thrilling races featuring classic cars from the 1940s through the 1960s, with a notable emphasis on sustainability as this year many races were run using sustainable fuel. This marked a historic milestone for the Revival, further positioning it as a leading classic motorsport event.

RACING AT ITS BEST

From pre-war grand prix cars to 1960s GT legends, the range of vehicles displayed at Goodwood Revival is always breathtaking. A standout race was the Royal Automobile Club TT Celebration, which saw iconic cars like the Ferrari 250 GTO, AC Cobra, and Aston Martin DB4 GT going head-to-head, providing thrilling wheel-to-wheel action. The St. Mary’s Trophy also stood out with a grid of saloon cars, featuring legends like the Mini Cooper S and Ford Lotus Cortina, driven by a mix of professional racers and historic car enthusiasts, a two-part race, which saw Bill Shepherd and Romain Dumas in the mighty Ford Galaxie 500 dominate both segments, showcasing raw power over the nimbler Minis and Alfa Romeos.

One of the most anticipated moments of the weekend was the tribute to Sir Jackie Stewart, celebrating 55 years since his first Formula 1 World Championship win. The unveiling of the restored Tyrrell Shed, which housed the cars that helped Stewart secure his victories in the 1970s, was a touching highlight.

Another standout was the Whitsun Trophy, where drivers wrestled with treacherous wet conditions. Oli Bryant navigated the slippery track in a Lola-Chevrolet T70 Spyder to take first place, further securing his title as the Driver of the Meeting.

TRIBUTES

Beyond racing, the event included tributes to motor racing legends like John Surtees and marked the 80th anniversary of D-Day with a stunning display of military vehicles.

The weekend also marked the 75th anniversary of Lotus, paying tribute to one of Britain’s most iconic racing marques. A special exhibition showcased some of the most important cars in Lotus’ history, including the Lotus 25, which revolutionized Formula 1 with its monocoque design, as well as the legendary Lotus 49 and Lotus 72 that contributed to the brand’s storied F1 dominance. This tribute honoured the engineering genius of Colin Chapman and his lasting impact on motorsport.

SUSTAINABILITY

Marking a historic milestone, Goodwood Revival 2024 also continued its efforts toward sustainability. Races across the weekend saw several cars, particularly in special demonstration runs, powered by synthetic fuels and biofuels, as part of a broader initiative to reduce the carbon footprint of the event while maintaining the authenticity of classic motoring.

Some race series and specific exhibitions featured vehicles running on sustainable alternatives, showcasing the potential for preserving the spirit of historic motorsport while embracing greener technologies. However, many of the race cars continued to use traditional fuels to maintain their originality, as these vehicles are often preserved in their exact historical configurations.
